About Taj Express
The Taj Express is a famous express train among the tourists. Earlier it used to connect two historic cities- Agra and Delhi. Now, it joins the two historic cities of Jhansi and New Delhi, since the year 2006. The Taj Express train number is 12279 when it carries passengers from New Delhi to Jhansi Junction. The Taj Express train number is 12280 when it runs from Jhansi Junction to New Delhi.
History of the Taj Express
The Taj Express was introduced in the year 1964 to connect the two popular tourist destinations- Agra and Delhi. The train, running at a speed of 105 km in one hour, took 2 hours and 35 minutes to reach from Delhi to Agra. Tourists (including foreigners) loved this train as they got sufficient time to explore the Taj Mahal and other monuments in Agra before the Taj Express brought them back to Delhi in the evening.
Diesel locomotives are used by the train from the year 1982. In the same year, its route was extended up to Gwalior by Madhavrao Scindia, who was the Railway Minister of India at that time. The train started its journey from Hazrat Nizamuddin and reached Gwalior in 5 hours and 20 minutes. The route was further extended up to Jhansi in 2006, on 1st July.
