The nomenclature of this train
Though the train has been named the Island Express, there is no island in its route. The train got this intriguing name because the journey of the predecessor of this train finished at the Cochin Harbour Terminus station, which is situated on the Willingdon Island in Cochin. It was the scenario until the middle of the 1970s. During that period, Island Express was the single train that connected the two states of Kerala and Karnataka. The WAP4 5350Hp AC locomotive hauls this train.
History of the Island Express
When the Island Express started its services, it ran through Jolarpet to Aluva, then Ernakulam Junction and ended its journey at Willington Island’s Cochin Harbour Terminus. It was later renamed as the Nagarcoil Bangalore Express, in the 1970s. In the year 1979, another broad gauge line was added up to Nagercoil from the city of Trivandrum. Afterward, it was decided that the train would travel up to Kanyakumari. The train does not stop at Jolarpet anymore. From 1998 to 2004, the Island Express ran on a separate route. Its through Hosur from the Bangalore station up to Salem. That is the background story of the Island Express.
