How to Change Date of Birth in an Indian Passport

How to Change Date of Birth (DOB) in an Indian Passport?

As a person who is applying for a passport in India, you have to submit the proof of your date of birth (DoB) – such as your birth certificate. The passport will be issued based on the documents that you offer – which would ensure that you will not need to change your DoB in your passport at any time in future. However, authorities can make an error while entering the DoB on your passport. As an applicant, it is your responsibility to verify all the printed information on your passport and ensure their accuracy right after the issuing of the document.

What to Do in Case of a Wrong DoB on Your Indian Passport?

It happens extremely rarely that the authority issuing the passport prints wrong information about DoB on an Indian passport. However, if that unfortunately happens in your case, you can get in touch with the passport officer to make a request for a change in your DoB – as printed in your passport.

If the passport authority was responsible for the mistake, a new passport will be issued with your exact DoB. You do not have to pay any fee in this case. However, if it is found that you submitted the wrong date of birth, a fee of 500 INR would be charged for the issuance of your new passport along with the proper DoB.

What are the Documents to Submit for DOB Proof?

You are expected to submit the following:

  1. Birth Certificate for Passport – You have to mention your DOB in your form of application for your Indian passport.
  2. Proof of Date of Birth – You can produce the following along with the form of application for proving your DOB:
  3. DOB certificate from the accredited educational institution or school that you attended last
  4. Birth Certificate, as issued by Registrar of Births & Deaths district office or a municipal authority
  5. An affidavit that is sworn in the presence of a Notary / Magistrate, which states the date of birth – as applicable in case of applicants who are semi-literate or illiterate

For applicants who are born after or on January 26, 1989, the Passport Office only accepts birth certificate issued by Registrar of Births & Deaths district office or municipal authority.

Changing DOB on Indian Passport within 5 Years

If requests are made for changing DOB within 5 years not on the basis of certificate from Register of Births and Deaths but on the basis of other supportive documents, the authorities issuing passport have to impose a penalty on the applicants for getting a passport by furnishing wrong details about their DOB in the previous passport application.

In all these cases, there is issuance of a new passport with a change in the date of birth when documents are accepted and the relevant passport fee and penalty charges are paid.

As per instruction from The Ministry of External Affairs, the authorities issuing passports should reject applications for changing date of birth where applicants have to make an application after 5 years since the date of passport issuance.

Earlier, it was impossible to change the DOB in an Indian Passport after the lapse of 5 years from the time of issuing of the passport. However, new guidelines have been announced by the Government of India – which makes it more convenient for passport holders to change DOB in their passports.
