In the year 1960 and thanks to the Bombay State Reorganization Act, the state of Gujarat was separated from the known state of Bombay, so a new High Court was required to carry out all the judicial functions of the new state. For this reason, the High Court of Gujarat was created on May 1, 1960, under the direction of Chief Justice Sunderlal Trikamlal Desai, who served as Chief Justice until January 25, 1961, the date on which retirement. Currently, the High Court of Gujarat is located in the city of Ahmedabad, capital of Gujarat.

The number of Chief Justice that the High Court of Gujarat has had is 24. The last Chief Justice to be named and who currently serves is the Hon’ble Mr. Justice R. Subhash Reddy, who since February 13, 2016 holds the position. He will continue in office until January 4, 2019, the date on which he must retire, or sooner if he so wishes.
Hon’ble Mr. Justice R. Subhash Reddy was born in 1957 and was involved in the world of law from an early age. He entered the High Courts in 2002, when he was elected as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on December 2 of that year. He served in different High Courts in India until February 2016, when he was Chief Justice in Gujarat. He shares the High Court of Gujarat with the 31 judges who serve there.
