The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir was established by the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir in the year of 1928, with a force of 9 permanent judges and 5 additional judges. Lala Kanwar Sain was the first Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, and Lala Bodh Raj Sawhney and Khan Sahib Aga Syed Hussain were the Puisne Judges. Currently, the Acting Chief Justice, Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar, is in charge of the court.

The last Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir was Badar Durrez Ahmed, who entered the office on April 1, 2017 and was in charge of it until his retirement, on March 16, 2018. He entered Delhi High Court as Judge and was there until his promotion to Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir. After his retirement, Justice Sudhakar assumed the role of Acting Chief Justice for the second time (his first time was between March 15 and March 31, 2017).

Justice Sudhakar entered the Madras High Court as Additional Judge in 2005, and was promoted to permanent judge in 2007. In 2016 I was appointed as judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.
