Horticulture’s growth in Karnataka has an exciting historical background which reminds us of various compelling facts, significant achievements and also pride legacies. Though there were some Horticulture crops that the farmers of Karnataka have been cultivating for ages, both Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali deserve credit for their cultivation for commercial purpose. In the year 1760, near Bangalore Fort, Hyder Ali initiated a royal orchard and named it Lalbagh. Later, Tipu Sultan bettered the garden.
He gave it systematic layouts and making other improvements. He collected many important native plants and exotic plants, fruits, flowers, and vegetables from far off destinations like Arabia, Persia, Oman, Turkey, Isle of France, Malacca, Zanzibar, etc. After Tipu Sultan, the English looked after production in Lalbagh. They declared it as the Government Botanical Garden in 1856.
The year of establishment of the pioneering Horticulture farm in Karnataka is 1942. The year of establishment of the Karnataka Horticulture Department is 1963, and Dr. M. H. Marigowda became the Director of Karnataka Horticulture Department. This department started handling various schemes that the Karnataka’s Department of Agriculture handled. So, through multiple feats and achievements, Karnataka earned its name as the ‘Horticulture State of India.
