Bihar is a state in India which is a part of Northern as well as eastern India. Concerning its area, Bihar is India’s 13th largest state. Its total area is 94,163 square kilometres or 36,357 square miles. By its population,Bihar State ranks third in India. The official language of Bihar is Hindi. 15 districts have accepted Urdu as the official language. Magahi, Maithili, Angika, and Bhojpuri are used widely for communication.

Formation of Bihar State

Bihar was earlier a part of Bengal. Orissa and Bihar together became a separate state in 1912. Later in 1935, Bihar and Orissa became two different states. Ancient History

In the Gupta Period, the Nalanda University was established. Lord Buddha frequently visited Bihar, and several Buddhist ruins are found in the state.

Etymology

Bihar has derived its name from the Pali and Sanskrit word ‘Vihara’ which means ‘abode.’ The state had several Buddhist Viharas. The Buddhist monks lived in these Viharas in the ancient as well as the medieval periods.
