Ancient History
In the Gupta Period, the Nalanda University was established. Lord Buddha frequently visited Bihar, and several Buddhist ruins are found in the state.

Etymology
Bihar has derived its name from the Pali and Sanskrit word ‘Vihara’ which means ‘abode.’ The state had several Buddhist Viharas. The Buddhist monks lived in these Viharas in the ancient as well as the medieval periods.
