The Cabinet Secretariat of India – मंत्रिमंडल सचिवालय भारत सरकार
The Cabinet Secretariat is the governing body that is accountable for the administration of the Government of India (GOI). It performs its functions from New Delhi’s Secretariat Building – the place where the majority of the Cabinet sits in India. It consists of a set of twin buildings, situated on Rajpath’s opposite sides. These buildings are the abodes of some of the most significant ministers of the Indian Government, located at Raisina Hill, in New Delhi.
The Union Cabinet in India
The Cabinet of India is the supreme body for making administrative decisions in India. According to Article 352 of the Indian Constitution, only the Prime Minister of India and Indian Cabinet Ministers are the members of the Cabinet of India or the Union Cabinet.
The Secretariat Building is the house of the following ministries:
- Ministry of Defence or MoD
- MEA – Ministry of External Affairs
- Ministry of Finance or MoF
- Prime Minister’s Office, abbreviated as PMO
- Ministry of Home Affairs or MHA

Two buildings of the Secretariat Building
The Secretariat Building comprises of two different buildings, namely,
- The North Block
- The South Block
Design of the Secretariat Building
Herbert Baker, a renowned British architect, designed the Secretariat Building. The building has adopted elements from the Rajputana style of architecture. Another striking feature of this building is its dome-shaped structure, called the Chatri, a unique design of India.
Cabinet Secretary
The Cabinet Secretary of India is the Civil Service Board’s ex-officio head. He is also the head of the Indian Administrative Service, the civil services, and the Cabinet Secretariat. The Cabinet Secretary is usually the most senior officer of India’s Administrative Service. He is directly under the charge of India’s Prime Minister. The tenure of the Cabinet Secretary is not fixed and is subject to extension.
