About the Calcutta High Court
This court is located in the city of Kolkata, which is the capital of West Bengal. It has jurisdiction over the state of West Bengal, and also over the Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Being the first High Court of India, it was originally chaired by an English judge, and the court called the High Court of Judicature at Fort William, but a year after it founded, in 1863, it began to preside over by Indian judges, and the first was the Justice Sumboo Nath Pandit. It called both “High Court of Kolkata” and “High Court of Calcutta” because the name of the city changed from “Calcutta” to “Kolkata” in 2001, but the institution continued to identify itself with the previous name.

Chief Justice of Calcutta
Currently, the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court is the honorable Mr. Justice Jyotimary Bhattacharya. This man was born on September 25 1956 in India and completed high school and college in Calcutta. He Completed graduation from law school at the University of Calcutta. Hon. Bhattacharya began practicing as a lawyer in 1983 in the High Court of Calcutta and participates in the areas of Civil Law and Writ Jurisdiction. He appointed the permanent head of the High Court of Calcutta in 2003, and despite having served as Acting Chief Justice since 2017, it was recently when he was officially given the position of Chief Justice of the High Court of Calcutta, on May 1 of 2018.
