The temple is associated with an epic of Mahabharata. It says that Janamejeya, the grandson of the third prince of Panadavas, Arjun, performed “Sarpa yagam”, in order to rescue his father Parikshit from a curse. Sarpa yagam is a traditional ritualistic which involves sacrificing snakes into the fire to finish their race. Ganga was solicited by the snakes to save them by ending the Yagam with flushing out the fire.
Ganga appeared and divided the Manjeera River into 7 narrow streams that flowed and touched the feet of Bhavani or Goddess Vana Durga situated in the holy place of the temple which is built at the junction where these seven streams are merged. The River currently flows in 7 narrow streams which originates from Ghanpur and forms a meeting point near to the temple.
