What is an Ontario’s Driver’s Licence?
An Ontario’s Drivers Licence is a blue plastic card that you need to carry with you all the time. It has your name, date of birth, photo, address, and signature. The licence has to be renewed every 5 years because it expires.
There are 15 different types of licences in Ontario and each of them certifies you to drive a specific type of motor vehicle. To legally drive in Ontario you must have a valid driver’s licence, a valid owner permit, licence plate and insurance and you must drive safely and obey traffic laws.
How do I apply for an Ontario’s Driver’s Licence?
If you are a new driver and you want to get an Ontario drivers licence you must be at least 16 years old, pass a written test about the rules of the road and traffic signs and pass an eye test. This will get you a G1 licence, which designates you as a beginner driver.
You can apply and take the tests at a Drive Test center or at the Service Ontario College Park in downtown Toronto, Canada. Once there you will have to pay to do the written test and you will have to bring an original document that proves your identity and includes your legal name, signature, and date of birth.

Once you get your G1 licence, you can get your full G licence by finishing to learning levels (G1 and G2) and bypassing two road tests. You have up to five years to complete the process. To get the Ontario Drive clean test done by the authority follow the info here.
Ontario G2 Licence
Driving with a G1 licence has a lot of restrictions and you must always drive with another fully licensed driver. Practicing with a G1 licence usually takes 12 months. After that year, you can take the first road test, and if you approve, you will get a G2 licence. You can do the test sooner if you take a government-approved driver education course. Having a G2 licence also has a lot of restrictions, but not as many as the ones you have with a G1 licence. Once you’ve practiced for 12 months with the G2 licence, you can take the second road test. If you pass the test, you will get a full G licence, without the restrictions of the previous two.
