Delhi High Court
New Delhi is one of the 11 districts of the city of Delhi and is the capital of India. There is the High Court of Delhi, which was established on October 31, 1966, through the Delhi High Court Act, on September 5, 1966. This Act was executed due to New Delhi’s status as the capital of India, since that began to grow fast in population and importance for the nation.
High Court of Delhi: History
Years before the creation of the High Court of Delhi, the High Court of Judicature at Lahore was in charge of the jurisdiction over the then provinces of the Punjab and Delhi. All this changed when there was the division of India due to its independence in the year of 1947. A new High Court arose in the year of 1947, the High Court of East Punjab. This High Court began to operate in a building called “Peterhoff”, but it caught fire in 1981.
Sometime later, the “East” of the name was eliminated, becoming the High Court of Punjab. It still had the jurisdiction over the territory of Delhi, without being physically in the place. This changed when parliament decided, due to the increased population of Delhi, that the city needed its own nearby High Court. In 1966, and with only 4 judges, Chief Justice K. S. Hegde, Justice I. D. Dua, Justice H. R. Khanna and Justice S. K. Kapur, the High Court of Delhi was established in New Delhi.
The number of judges in the High Court of Delhi increased progressively over the years, reaching the current amount of 29 permanent Judges and 19 Additional Judges.

Currently, Justice Geeta Mittal holds the position of Acting Chief Justice since April 2017. Gita Mittal, born in 1958, was appointed Additional Judge of the Supreme Court of Delhi on July 16, 2004, to later be appointed permanent judge in the High Court in 2006. Gita Mittal graduated from the Campus Law Center, Delhi University in 1981. Throughout her career, she has solved a large number of important cases, participated in different councils and commissions, as well as in the struggle for women’s rights, and the cases of sexual harassment.
