About Muthuvel Karunanidhi:
Karunanidhi is a politician of India who served as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister five different occasions. He is the president of DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), a major political party of Dravidians in Tamil Nadu state. In 1969, Karuna nidhi started leading this party since the death of the party’s founder, Annadurai.
In his political career of more than 60 years, he holds the winning record of seat everytime he contested. He has also worked as screen writer and playwright for Cinemas in Tamil. He is well known as “Kalaignar” (artist) by his supporters. With this reason he was also called as kalaignar karunanidhi.

Karunanidhi was inspired by Alagiriswami’s Speech of Justice Party and then decided to join politics at his 14 years of age. He began his political career by participating in Anti Hindi debates. He established a community in his locality of youth and circulated “Manavar Nesan”, a hand written newspaper among its members.
Later he found a organization of students named “TN Tamil Manavar Mandram”. It was the initial student group of Dravidian Movement. Along with other member of organisation he will also involved in social works. He initiated a newspaper which now turned into “Murasoli”, currently his party’s official newspaper.
MK Karunanidhi suddenly entered into politics started with involvement in Kallakudi dispute occurred in 1953. The native name of industrial town was Kallakudi and was changed to Dalmiapuram to name it after a cement lord built a cement plant here. The Karunanidhi party DMK was demanding to rename it as Kallakudi. During this objection, two people were dead and kalaignar was arrested.
In 1957, he was elected first to the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu from Kulithalai of Tituchirapelli region. In 1961, he served as DMK money handler and opposition party deputy leader in the state assembly.

In 1967, when Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam came into power, he worked as public works minister. In 1969, after C. N. Annadurai’s death, he became TamilNadu’s CM. During his career, he worked in various positions in government and party.
He was defeated many times by M. G. Ramachandran’s of ADMK until his death in 1987. He became CM in 1996. In 2001 elections, DMK party lost against AIADMK’s J. Jayalalitha.
In 2006 elections, he was back again as CM defeating J. Jayalalitha. Again he lost against her in 2011 elections of Assembly. Currently, he is representing Tiruvarur constituency in Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu. He has been elected to Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu twelve times and once to Legislative Council of Tamil Nadu.

- He was honoured with Raja Rajan Award by Tamil University for Thenpandi Singam, a book written by him.
- A honorary doctorate was given by Annamalai University in 1971.
- On 15th Dec 2006, he was awarded given doctorate by TamilNadu Governor and Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University, Surjit Singh Barnala.
