It is said about the temple that Lord Shiva was here on earth to marry Goddess Parvati (Meenakshi) in the form of Sundareshwar. The temple is located at the same place.
Temple Texture (Architecture)
The height of this temple is 160 Feets & spread over 14 acres. In order to enhance the beauty of the temple and to protect it surrounded by high-rise walls. There are two other temples in the premises other than Sundareshwar and Meenakshi like Saraswati Devi temples, Rukmani, Lord Ganesha, Murugan, Lakshmi.
There is a pond in the temple ‘Porthamrai Kulam’ which means gold lotus pond. 165 feet long gold and 120 feet wide lotus is exactly the middle of the pond. Devotees believe that Lord Shiva’s residence is in this lake. Inside the temple, the mythology of Lord Shiva written on the pillars and on the eight pillars, the Goddess Lakshmi Ji statue remains. There 4 main entrances (Gopurams) which connected to the temple. There are 14 gopurams in this temple in the multi-story district. Apart from this, there is a very big and beautiful place in which there 1000 pillars engaged. The lions and elephants that have remained. The roof of the temple is very colorful.
Meenakshi Temple Mandapas – மீனாட்சி கோயில் மண்டபம்
In the complex of Meenakshi temple has many mandaps, also called as Pillard halls which built by kings & wealthy patrons over the centuries. Here, we can find the 100 mandapas. This Meenakshi mandapa houses famed Statue of Nataraja with his right leg up in mudra dance, instead of left leg found in Nataraja bronzes.
Special celebration
The Tirukalyanam festival, celebrated in April every year, is the most special celebration, which celebrated for 10 days in which millions of devotees Joins the celebrations. Even during Navratri and Shivratri, there is great fanfare.
Madurai Meenakshi Temple Timings – மதுரை மீனாட்சி கோவில் நேரம்
The temple is open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. But from 12 noon to 4 o’clock the temple closed. The temple opened all day of the week. Near to the Meenakshi Amman Temple, you can also find Golden Temple Vellore which is also more famous in India.
How to reach
It takes about 90 minutes from Chennai Airport to reach Madurai. By reaching Madurai airport, the Meenakshi Temple can also reach by booking taxis and cabs.
