Ministry of Coal in India – कोयला मंत्रालय
Central Government of India created a Ministry named The Ministry of Coal to monitor the coal reserves in India. It has its headquarters in New Delhi’s Shastri Bhawan.
The Ministry of Coal is accountable for the exploration of lignite and coal reserves in our country. It also takes care of the production, distribution, price, and supply of coal all over India. It does it with the help of a government-owned corporation named Coal India Limited along with its subsidiaries, and also with the help of Neyveli Lignite Corporation.
The Ministry of Coal monitors 49% equity of the Union Government in Singareni Collieries which is a public sector company and takes a joint venture with the State Government of Telangana. The state government of Telangana holds 51% of the equity of Singareni Collieries Company, and the Indian Government owns the rest.

Responsibilities and functions of the Ministry of Coal
The Ministry of Coal has different responsibilities in the following areas:
- Development and exploration of non-cooking and cooking coal and also the lignite deposits in our country
- Monitoring supply of coal, coal production in India, prices, and distribution of coal
- Administering the coal mines in India according to the provisions of the Conversation and Development Act of 1974
- Monitoring the workings of the Coal Mines Welfare Organization
- Monitoring the activities of the Coal Mines Provident Fund Organization
- Making sure that everybody maintains the rules mentioned in the Mines Act
- Developing and operating coal washeries. The Department of Steel monitors other washeries.

Coal reserves 
The coal reserves in India have made it possible for India to acquire the fifth position among the world’s largest coal reserves. Coal deposits are available in south-central and eastern parts of the country. 98% of India’s coal reserves are available in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra.
