Ministry of Water Resources (MOWR) – जल संसाधन, नदी विकास और गंगा संरक्षण मंत्रालय,

The Ministry of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation is a body in India. It designed for formulating and administering rules and regulations of the utilization and development of water resources in the country. The Government of India established this Ministry in the year 1985, in January after the bifurcation of the contemporary Ministry of Irrigation and Ministry of Power.जल संसाधन मंत्रालय -mowr website

The Ministry of Water Resources is the updated version of the Department of Irrigation. It has acquired its new name, the “Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation,” in the year 2014, in July. At present, MOWR is the ‘National Ganga River Basin Authority’ that deals with development, conservation, management and also abatement of water pollution not only from the river Ganga but also from its various tributaries like Yamuna, Son, etc.

Before the establishment of MOWR, various agencies were accountable for the water resources in the country. Those agencies are as follows:

  2. The Ministry of Energy and Irrigation
  3. Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation
  4. The Ministry of Irrigation

When we are talking about the rejuvenation of essential rivers like Yamuna and Ganga, enhancing water-use efficiency and restricting excess extraction of water are both equally important. The Namami Gange Mission started to clean & rejuvenate Ganga River water. According to the Water Resources’ Union Minister, increasing efficiency of water use will increase the availability of water. It will also rejuvenate the rivers. The government is even thinking about setting up plants for proper treatment of industrial effluents, and they are also trying to find better ways of sewage management.ganga rejuvenation

The Ministry is focusing on increasing opportunities for the storage of groundwater as well as the construction of more significant dams such as the Bhakra-Nangal dam to increase the availability of water in the country. Sufficient water is available under the ground. Therefore, the Ministry will take significant innovative steps to improve the utility of groundwater. Proper measures are necessary for harvesting and conserving water. Formulation of a national water policy will make the work easier.
