NIT Durgapur
The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, is a well-known public engineering institute in India situated in the city of Durgapur in the state of West Bengal. The abbreviated form of the National Institute of Technology Durgapur is NIT DGP. NIT’s works under the governance of MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development). The earlier name of the institution was the Regional Engineering College, abbreviated as REC DGP.
NIT of Durgapur deserves credit for being one of the pioneering 8 Regional Engineering Colleges founded in India. Bidhan Chandra Roy founded this institution in the year 1960 when he was the Chief Minister of West Bengal. At present, there are 31 National Institutes of Technology in several parts of India among which the Indian Government has acknowledged NIT DGP as an Institute of National Importance according to the provisions of the National Institutes of Technology Act of 2007.
Formation of National Institute of Technology Durgapur
As the demand for trained and skilled technical workforce increased in India, the Indian Government commenced 14 Regional Engineering Colleges from 1959 to 1965 in the cities of Srinagar, NIT Warangal, Nagpur, Calicut, Allahabad, Surat, Bhopal, Durgapur, etc. So, NIT Durgapur is one of those colleges.
Departments at NIT DGP
NIT, Durgapur has several departments to offer quality education to meritorious students. Some of those departments are Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Humanities and Social Sciences, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Earth and Environmental Studies, Management Studies, Mathematics, Computer Applications, Biotechnology and Computer Science and Engineering. The National Institutional Framework or NIRF ranked the NIT Durgapur as 47th top engineering college in India in 2018.
