The President of India is the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of India and also the head of state. The residence of the President is the Rashtrapati Bhavan (राष्ट्रपति भवन), and his term is of five years.

Origin of the rank of President in India

After India freed itself from the British rule in 1947, on 15th August, India decided to draft an entirely new constitution for the countrymen and the country. We started following the Indian Constitution on 26th January 1950. There were no separate offices for the governor-general and monarch anymore as there was a new office for the Rashtrapathi (राष्ट्रपति) or the Indian President and that was their office too. The primary responsibility of the President is preserving, protecting and defending the Indian Constitution and maintain law and order in our country as stated in Article 60 of our constitution. After Rajendra Prasad, several presidents have served India including Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Varahagiri-Venkata Giri, Fakhruddin Ali, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, Ramaswamy Venkataraman, Zail Singh, Shankar Dayal Sharma, Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam and Pratibha Patil. The former president of India was Pranab Mukherjee. The President of India Ram Nath Kovind. Article 58 states the primary qualifications a person needs to become the President of India. The candidate needs to be:

  • An Indian citizen
  • Eligible for becoming a member of the Lower House (Lok Sabha)
  • His or her age should be at least 35 years

A person holding any office under the Central Government or the State Government or if a person is working for any Union or State Government’s local body, he or she cannot become a President. Some office-holders are eligible for becoming the President, and they are:

  1. A State Governor
  2. The present Vice-President
  3. Any State or Union Minister (including Chief Ministers and the Prime Minister)
