History of Satish Dhawan Space Centresatish dhawan

The Union Government of India (भारत सरकार) chose Sriharikota (श्रीहरिकोटा) Island as a satellite launching station in the year 1969. The center has become operational in the year 1971 with the launch of the sounding rocket RH-125. The pioneering launch from this center of an orbital satellite was Rohini 1A, and it took place in 1979, on 19th August. However, the orbit of the satellite decayed because of a problem in thrust vectoring.sdsc

The Indian Government decided to rename Sriharikota Range (SHAR) as ‘Satish Dhawan Space Centre’ in the year 2002, on 5th September to honor the memory of Satish Dhawan, who has served ISRO as its Chairman.

Launchpads of SDSC

At present, the SHAR facility comprises two different launch pads. After ISRO completes building a third launch pad, it will become the most important base for the famous ‘Indian human spaceflight program.

SLV Launch Padisro sdsc

The Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle and the Satellite Launch Vehicle used the SLV LaunchPad in Satish Dhawan Space Centre.

First Launch Pad or FLPshar sriharikota

The Indian Space Research Organization built the modernized First Launch Pad in the first half of the 1990s for launching the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle. The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle has also used it. At present, the First Launch Pad is a subject to expansion. Once the expansion finishes, it can cater to nearly 15 launches per year.

Second Launch Pad or SLPsdsc isro

Second Launch Pad has become operational from the year 2005 in Satish Dhawan Space Centre. Its difference from the First Launch Pad lies in the fact that it functions on the system of Integrate Transfer and Launch. SLP is a global launch pad that can accommodate ISRO’s GSLV, GSLV Mk, and PSLV launch vehicles.

Third Launch Pad or TLPsriharikota isro

The center is planning for a Third Launch Pad at the expense of Rs 6 million, and the latest launch pad would have the potential of providing support to even crewed missions in Satish Dhawan Space Centre.
