After the establishment of the High Court of Fort William in 1862 in the capital city of West Bengal, Kolkata, the North East India of today, it directly came under the Calcutta High Court of Fort William’s jurisdiction. It continued for years till the Assam High Court came into existence in 1948. However, before that, the district courts in the different North Eastern States came under the surveillance of the High Court of Fort William.

They have a common Bar Council comprises the advocates of different states.
