The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation or MDWS is one of the Ministries of the Indian Government. The Government set up this ministry for the maintenance of hygiene in India. The year of establishment of the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation is 2011.
History of the establishment of the MDWS
In the year 1999, the Government of India created the Department of Drinking Water Supply or DDWS. The Ministry of Rural Development monitors its activities. The primary focus of DDWS was to improve the sanitation in the country and pay attention to the problems related to potable water. In 2010, it DDWS got a new name as the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation. Within a year, the Central Government gave the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation the position of a Ministry keeping in mind that the poor sanitation conditions are prevalent in India.
Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation is India’s nodal department that takes care of overall policy, funding, planning and also coordinating programmes of sanitation and drinking water in the country.
The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation and its responsibilities
The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation is accountable for implementing Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Mission or Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (PDF available) in the rural parts of India. It monitors the construction of toilets for poor people living in the rural regions of the country. The target of the Ministry for 2015-16 was to construct 6 million toilets in different parts of the country. But they surprised everyone in 2015-16 because they constructed 8 million toilets.

It educates the state governments to make arrangements for providing drinking water to people without involving massive wastage of plastic.
