On July 7, 2016, the Union Cabinet approved the government’s flagship scheme ‘Namami Gange’. This project aims to Ganga River Rejuvenation & purifying the water in holy River Ganga under the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation as National Mission for Clean Ganga NMCG.

To clean the Ganga, the money is four times the amount spent by the government in the last 30 years.
It is worth mentioning that the Indian government has spent a total of four thousand crores for this work since 1985.
This ambitious scheme began with 231 projects simultaneously from Varanasi and Haridwar.
In Haridwar, where Uma Bharti and Nitin Gadkari started this scheme, then in the Varanasi, the Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha introduced this scheme.
Significantly, the total length of the Ganges is 2525 Kms. The basin of the Ganga 1. 6 million square kilometers, 468. 7 billion metric water flow throughout the year, which is 25.2 percent of the country’s total water source. A population of 45 crores settled in its basin.

In order to implement this thinking, the government launched a unified Ganga Conservation Mission called ‘Namami Gange’ to end the pollution of river Ganges and revive the river.
The Union Cabinet has approved the proposed work plan of the center to spend Rs 20,000 crores on the cleaning of the river by 2019-2020 and it will have a central plan with 100% central stake, Made the form.
The challenge of Ganga conservation is multi-sectoral and multi-dimensional. It has the role of many stakeholders, including enhancing the coordination between the various ministries and the center-state and the participation of all in the preparation of the work plan. The central and the state Efforts made to improve the monitoring system at all level.
The implementation of the program divided into three parts-
(i) Initial level activities (to show immediate effect),
(ii) Medium-term activities (to be implemented within 5 years of the time limit), and
(iii) Long-term activities (to be implemented within 10 years).
Apart from these activities, steps taken to monitor the quality of biodiversity conservation, afforestation (forestry), and water quality besides these activities.
Programs already started for the protection of important reputed species, such as – Golden Mahasir, Dolphin, Turtle, Butterfly etc.
Similarly, under the ‘Namami Gange’, the increase of aquifers, reduction of erosion and improvement of the ecosystem of the river will be planted on 30,000 hectares of land.
Afforestation program started in 2016.
113 real-time water quality monitoring centers already set up to monitor the quality of water at a large scale.
